Picture Enfield - Then And Now
An old photograph and story from Enfield's past and how that site appears today, plus a trivia question.

ENFIELD, CT — Today's throwback photo, courtesy of the Facebook group Picture Enfield, features the Jade Inn, a longtime dining institution on Route 5 in the southern end of town. Owner Paul Yi operated the restaurant throughout the 1970s into the 1980s, during which time he helped facilitate the "sister city" arrangement between Enfield and Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
The Jade Inn was the site of the initial organizational meeting in 1971 between Dan McLaughlin and several other individuals, which resulted in the formation of Asnuntuck Community College. Dirty Betty Brown used to sing on weekends in the bar downstairs.
Since the closure of the Jade Inn, a number of businesses have occupied the building at 1541 King Street, which was constructed in 1950. The most successful venture was Christine's Restaurant, which operated there for nearly a decade.

Hacienda del Sol, a Mexican restaurant, was located at the site for several years before closing in 2015. The building has undergone renovation and is currently home to King's Wines & Liquors.
Here is a more contemporary look at the site.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's question was, "What was the name of the former mansion of Thompsonville Carpet Company founder Orrin Thompson, after which a school was eventually named?" The answer: Longview. Upon its admission of boys to Our Lady of the Angels Academy in 1986, the name was changed to Longview Catholic High School. The school continued to suffer from declining enrollment and only lasted two years under the new name before closing. Deb Duren was the first person to provide the correct answer.
This week's trivia question:
What significance does this farmer's field on Mountain Road in West Suffield, pictured below, play in the history of Enfield sports? Directions: leave your answer in the comments section here on the story, not on a Facebook page, and not via email. Have fun!
