Picture Enfield - Then And Now
An old photograph and story from Enfield's past and how that site appears today, plus a trivia question.

ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series contains a rare color photograph dating back to 1942 of a longtime business in the heart of Hazardville, Egan Motors.
Chick Egan owned and operated the garage, including a Gulf filling station, during the 1940s and 1950s. After his retirement, he rented the property to Teddy Smith, who owned the business when it burned down around 1960.
After being rebuilt, the business changed hands several times over the next few decades. Joseph Truiolo ran Joe's Transmissions there for more than a decade, disposing of the gas pumps, then Tony DiPace bought the property in 1992 and moved his business, Tony's Service Center, from its original location at 126 South Rd. Eventually, DiPace changed the name to Hazardville Motors, which remains today.

FYI clearly visible is the adjacent Hazardville Hotel, built in 1852, and which for decades housed the Hazardville Package Store on the first floor, east side. Hazardville Package Store - the first place I ever bought booze at age 15 (yes, 15, had to be driven there by a friend since I wasn't old enough to drive yet). I also bought at the old M & R in Scitico, but we all did since the lovely Margaret Jedziniak (may she rest in peace) was so tiny she couldn't see over the counter to know who was handing over their cash.
The property at 318 Hazard Avenue has not changed a great deal over time, as evidenced by the photo below, taken last week.
