ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series, courtesy of the great book of photos by the late Ed Malley entitled Enfield: 1950-1980, is a 1960s view of the southwest corner of Enfield and North Main streets. It shows Lee's Variety Store, D'Aleo & Sons grocers and the North Main Street Package Store.

These buildings, and several hundred more in Thompsonville, were torn down in the mid-1970s during the "urban renewal" project. The eastern end of North Main Street, which formerly ran right next to Town Hall, was moved south to align with Elm Street, and the town green was constructed.

The photo below from Google Maps shows the approximate location of the site as it appears today.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was, "Anyone who ever made the 2 a.m. crawl to Denny's from the Pumpernickel Pub, the Dial Tone, Memories Cafe or the Leopard Lounge in the 1980s and 1990s surely encountered "Ma," who worked there for 21 years. What was her actual name?" The answer: Koreen Valeo, shown below in a photo taken by Irene Krasinski which was featured in this column four years ago. That story may be found here.

This week's trivia question:
For a half-century, the photo below has been called "my all-time favorite picture" by my sister Patti. It was taken exactly 50 years ago, in April 1970, shortly after we moved to Enfield from Vernon. I was a few months shy of entering kindergarten, and she had just turned three. Contrary to rumor, this is not a picture of my son Alex and Patti's daughter Erica, though it looks like it could be. Today's question is: where in Enfield was this portrait taken? Post the answer in the comments section below, or on the Enfield Patch Facebook page.
