ENFIELD, CT — Today's look back into Enfield history takes us to Gayle's Thyme Herbal Apothecary, which operated for nearly two decades in the former Hazardville Hotel building at the corner of Hazard Avenue and South Maple Street.

The store, opened by master herbalist Gayle Nogas in 1995, carried numerous varieties of herbs and spices, as well as aromatherapy, nutritional, metaphysical and spiritual supplies, candles, incense and jewelry. Nogas also offered classes, demonstrations, and workshops using herbs and aromatherapy for healing the mind, body and spirit.

Gayle's closed its retail storefront on Dec. 31, 2014, but retains an online presence at www.gaylesthyme.com.

A number of businesses had occupied the space at 316 Hazard Ave. prior to Gayle's, most notably the Hazardville Package Store. I fondly recall American Goldfinch, a short-lived bird supply store opened in the late 1990s by Jim Gallo, a classmate of mine from the Fermi High School Class of 1983. The current occupant is the Mane Habitat Hair Studio.

Here is a more contemporary look at the property, taken by yours truly.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was, "Angelina's Restaurant is an outstanding breakfast, lunch and dinner spot on the eastern edge of a small strip plaza in the Scitico section of Enfield. For many years, the site was home to Ann Fields Country Pie Restaurant. Prior to Angelina's, a presidential-themed restaurant briefly operated in that location. What was it called?" The answer: Ike's Restaurant, owned by Christos Balis and named in honor of former president Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Ike's opened in May 2007 and closed in 2011. Angelina's opened in 2012, and quite frankly, my kids and I love it. Jennifer Bruyette was the first person to provide the correct answer; she will receive a stunning Patch prize package worth at least a buck and a half.

This week's trivia question:
Prior to the 1978 construction of the plaza which currently houses Angelina's, there was a white building, which served breakfast and lunch, located just east of the current Dalene Flooring store. What was that small eatery called? Post the answer in the comments section below, or on the Enfield Patch Facebook page.
