ENFIELD, CT — A window at the John Maciolek American Legion Post 154 in Thompsonville was found smashed over the weekend, and a brick was found among shattered glass on the inside of the building, according to the post commander.

According to Enfield police logs, a vandalism call was received at 3:01 p.m. Sunday from the post. Post Commander Lucien Lefevre said the headquarters in the historic Sullivan building at 43 Pearl Street is not used every day, and estimated the damage could have been caused in a 48-hour span between Thursday and Saturday.

A 10-inch hole was discovered in a window on the south side of the building, which caused slight damage to a manger scene on display in the front window. A brick was found on the floor near the front door, with a trail of glass behind it, Lefevre said.

Replacing the window will cost several hundred dollars, as the post's renters' insurance does not cover it, according to Lefevre.

Enfield police are investigating the incident, Chief Alaric Fox said.

John H. Maciolek joined the U.S. Army on Nov. 11, 1943, and was later sent overseas to join a combat infantry division. He was wounded in action on July 24, 1944 in the battle of the Arno River crossing near Rome, Italy, while serving with the 91st Infantry Division, and died four days later at age 31. The American Legion post was formed in his honor a year later.
