ENFIELD, CT — A bizarre sequence of events which began last month culminated Wednesday with a suspect with seven outstanding warrants from the Torrington Police Department calling Enfield police and asking them to pick him up.

Jose Simms, 29, whose last known address was 20 Spring Street in Enfield but is now reported by police as homeless, called Enfield police at 5:09 a.m. Wednesday from outside the Angelo Lamagna Activity Center on North Main Street. He said he "wanted to turn himself in for having multiple warrants," Deputy Chief Fred Hall said.

Prior to arrival, a dispatcher confirmed a hard copy warrant with the Torrington Police Department, along with seven Prawn warrants. Four warrants were for first-degree failure to appear in court, while the other three were for second-degree failure to appear.

Simms met officers at the scene and was handcuffed and searched, then transported to the Granby Police Department, where he was transferred to the custody of Torrington authorities, Hall said.

He is being held in lieu of bonds totaling $30,500. He is scheduled to appear in Torrington Superior Court on July 3.

In an unusual negotiation with Torrington police on May 22, Simms agreed to turn himself in to authorities in that town if the police department's Facebook post about him being sought attained 15,000 likes. After the goal was surpassed, Simms did not surrender himself as promised, police said.

The Torrington Police Department Facebook post currently has over 29,000 likes.
