In this weekly series, Enfield Patch publishes a photo of a business or landmark in town that is no longer in existence.
Today’s photo does not go back very far in time; in fact, it dates to 2010, the year Shaw’s Supermarket left town.
The roots of Shaw’s trace back to 1860, when George C. Shaw opened a small store in Portland, Maine. Eventually, the company became the third-largest supermarket chain in New England.

In 1995, Shaw’s opened as the easternmost anchor of the Brookside Plaza on Hazard Avenue, in what had originally been Edwards Food Warehouse. The supermarket operated for 15 years until early 2010, when the parent company sold all of its Connecticut locations.
Today, the site houses ShopRite, owned by the Miller family, which opened in May 2010.
