Throwback Thursday: Do You Remember..?

A photo, video and story of a business from Enfield's past.

ENFIELD, CT - In this weekly series, Enfield Patch publishes a photo of a business or landmark in town that is no longer in existence.

Today we have a photo which is likely from the late 1980s, showing several businesses in the old, pre-Home Depot State Line Plaza at Elm Street and Freshwater Boulevard.

Figures & Fitness and Fayva Shoes can be spotted, as well as one I can't quite make out (looks like something Jean's??). The real story in this throwback, however, is in the top left corner: Katie's Cafe.

The display in the front of the picture states, "Miss Katie's." I don't know if it's a contest (like Miss America), or if the place had closed up (which would date the photo to the early 1990s) and the gentleman is crying in his beer.

In the 1980s in Enfield, if you were 21 (or at least 16 with a semi-decent fake ID maker), then Katie's was likely where you would be found. From the singles game "Selectrocution" to bands performing in the "Star Struck" competition, there was always something for everyone at Katie's.

Speaking of Star Struck, I came across a YouTube video recorded inside Katie's Cafe on April 8, 1985, with a band known as The Ledge playing "New Wave World." It lists the group members' names as Bob "Papa" Casinghino, Bob Cirillo, Johnny B, Bob Farrier, Jim Cote, Jean M., and it is posted at the bottom of this story.

Enfield Patch invites readers to share their memories of Katie's Cafe in the comments section below.
