This Needs to Stop

Holiday picnickers left the Scantic River Park West in Enfield a disaster area.

The Scantic River Park West recreation area down at Powder Hollow in Hazardville was the scene of a huge picnic on July 4. Unfortunately, nobody thought enough of this beautiful spot to pick up after themselves.

Two volunteers spent a few hours gathering and dragging bags of garbage, bottles, cans, clothes, diapers and food debris from along the riverside on July 5. This should be considered a sign of things to come if nothing is done about the situation.

Town Council member Carol Hall suggested at Monday night's meeting that the town should provide a couple of tipper barrels and monitor the area. That would be a start, but there were at least two truckloads of garbage gathered from that one holiday.

The private parking lot was half full, along with cars parked down both sides of the road around the blind S-turns heading toward . Trash was left in all areas where cars were parked. At least 70% of these cars were from Massachusetts.

This has to stop.
