DEEP RIVER, CT — Chester residents meet Tuesday to fix a typo in the town budget and adopt fire marshal fees, Essex's wetlands panel looks at cottage townhouses on Westbrook Road, and Deep River hosts a history talk and a Halloween movie night.
Here are five things to know about life around Chester, Essex and Deep River this week:
1. Chester Town Meeting On Budget Fix, Fire Marshal Fees
When: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m. (in person only)
Where: Chester Meeting House, 4 Liberty St., Chester
What to know: Voters will be asked to ratify the 2026-27 budget at $19,311,304; the legal notice and town meeting minutes listed $19,211,304 because of a scrivener's error, though the published spreadsheets and the mill rate used the higher figure, according to the warning. Also on the call: adding fire marshal permits to the ordinance that bars permits on property with unpaid taxes, a new ordinance setting Fire Marshal's office fees and an ordinance on excess tax payments and short payments under $5. 2. Essex Wetlands Panel Reviews Westbrook Road Cottage Townhouses
When: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m.
Where: Essex Town Hall, 29 West Ave., Essex
What to know: The Inland Wetlands Commission's posted materials include an application by 63 Westbrook Road LLC for cottage townhouses at 63 Westbrook Road, labeled Meadowbrook Cottages on the plans, which show a four-unit building. The application says no wetlands or watercourses would be altered, but three units would be built within the upland review area, and it estimates a one-year project.

3. 'Written In Stone' Talk At Deep River Library
When: Wednesday, Oct. 14, 6:30 p.m.
Where: Deep River Public Library, 150 Main St., Deep River
What to know: Local historian Richard Kalapos repeats his presentation on Native American beliefs and legends and the ancient technology and wonders pre-Colonial Native Americans left in Deep River, according to the first selectman's weekly roundup.

4. Free Halloween Movie Night In Deep River
When: Saturday, Oct. 17, 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 6)
Where: Deep River Town Hall, 174 Main St., Deep River
What to know: Parks and Recreation is showing "The Addams Family" for free, according to the town. Popcorn and candy will be for sale, along with DaVinci pizza slices and slushies from Tri-Town Youth Services. Seating is limited, so register ahead.

5. Deep River 60 Club Visits Chester Museum At The Mill
When: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Where: Chester Museum at The Mill, 9 West Main St. (Route 148), Chester
What to know: The Deep River 60 Club's field trip and program at the Chester museum is free and open to the public, according to Deep River's weekly roundup. Call 860-767-2302 with questions.
