Deep River Firehouse Search Continues After Historical Society Land Ruled Ineligible For Subdivision

Deep River fire officials continue searching for a firehouse site and report 21 September calls, training and budget updates.

DEEP RIVER, CT — The Deep River Firehouse Building Committee is continuing its search for a site for a new firehouse after learning that property belonging to the Deep River Historical Society cannot be subdivided for the project, according to the Board of Fire Commissioners' Oct. 5 meeting minutes.

Fire Chief Tim Lee told commissioners that the historical society had contacted the Connecticut attorney general's office and was informed that its land could not be subdivided for a firehouse.

Lee said the building committee is continuing its due diligence and examining additional potential sites.

Fire Department Responded To 21 Calls In September

Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Adam Kerop reported that the department responded to 21 calls during September.

The incidents included fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents, emergency medical assistance, mutual aid responses, downed wires, service calls, an appliance fire and a smoke investigation.

Fire safety inspections at local schools were continuing, Kerop said.

Kerop reported that the department participated in Deep River Day, providing standby coverage for the fireworks display with a brush truck on site. A fire safety trailer was also stationed in the center of town.

Fire Alarm System Requested For River Street Property

Lee asked commission Chairman David Berardis to contact the Board of Selectmen about obtaining a fire alarm system for the River Street property.

No vote was recorded on the matter.

Department Continues Training, Budget Closeout

Kerop said firefighters were continuing training activities, including live-burn exercises and fire prevention training.

He also reported that work was continuing to close out the department's 2025-26 budget.

Outstanding invoices included expenses for fire equipment, physical examinations and training. Kerop said he would follow up with the Finance Department about those payments.

Chief Engineer Tom Lee provided an update on the department's brush truck, including painting work.

Commissioners Approve September Minutes

Commissioners unanimously approved the minutes of their Sept. 14 meeting.

Commissioner Gary Elliott made the motion, which Commissioner Sean Scott seconded.

No new business was introduced.

The meeting began at 7 p.m. at 57 Union St. and adjourned at 7:20 p.m. following a unanimous vote.
