Substitute Teacher Accused Of Hitting Student In Chester

CHESTER, CT — A former local substitute teacher is accused of assaulting a child, according to state police.

Ruthanna Terreri, 64, of Madison, was charged on a warrant May 6 with risk of injury to a child and third-degree assault, state police said.

The charges stem from an incident on April 27 at Chester Elementary School, according to police and school officials.

Police did not release additional details about the incident.

Regional School District No. 4 Superintendent of Schools Brian White issued a letter on May 12 to families.

According to White, school administration received a report that a substitute teacher had hit a student in the head with their hand.

The teacher was placed on administrative leave, and her employment ended on April 29, according to the superintendent.

“Please know that the safety of our students is always our top priority, and we do not condone or permit hitting or inappropriate touching of students for any reason,” White said in the letter. “We appreciate the trust you place in us, and we assure you that this matter was handled swiftly and appropriately.”

Terreri was released on a $5,000 bond, and she is due to appear in Superior Court in Middletown on May 21.
