4 New Fairfield Virus Deaths; 85% Of Fatalities In Nursing Homes

In addition to new coronavirus numbers, the first selectwoman Thursday reported more recreational reopenings, including tennis courts.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Another four Fairfield residents were reported dead Thursday after contracting the new coronavirus, according to the first selectwoman.

In total, there have been 79 virus-associated fatalities in Fairfield, First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick said Thursday in an email to residents. Officials believe the virus is past its peak in Fairfield County, but new cases and deaths continue to be reported daily.

Kupchick noted 85 percent of the known virus deaths in town have involved residents living in one of Fairfield’s seven nursing homes and assisted living facilities, adding the facilities are being inspected by and getting guidance from state officials, with the town available to provide assistance and materials.

Statewide as of Thursday, Connecticut had 31,784 positive cases, 2,797 deaths and 1,385 hospitalizations, down by 60 day-over-day.

Also Thursday, Kupchick announced plans to open additional recreation spaces after beaches, marinas and select locations reopened last week following more than a month of closures due to the virus outbreak.

“The phased-in reopening of our town and state does not mean the pandemic is over or that we should let our guard down,” she said in the email.

As of 9 a.m. Friday, tennis courts will open at Gould Manor Park, Fairfield Warde High School, Fairfield Ludlowe High School, Fairfield Woods Middle School and Dwight Elementary School. Online reservations are recommended.

Courts at Owen Fish Park, Tomlinson Middle School, Veterans Park, and the Tunxis Hill Park pickle ball area will remain closed.

The H. Smith Richardson Golf Course is set to open May 15, when construction in the parking lot is expected to be finished. Tee times must be made prior to arrival.

Additionally, the parking lots at Jennings and Sasco beaches and Lake Mohegan will now open at 8 a.m. instead of 10 a.m. for residents with a valid 2020 town sticker.
