5 Rescued From Submerged Boat In Penfield Reef

The vessel was partially submerged with five people on board when police arrived, according to Fairfield authorities.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Five people were rescued over the weekend from Penfield Reef, according to police.

Emergency personnel received a call about 10:15 a.m. Saturday reporting an 18-foot Bayliner taking on water near Penfield Lighthouse, Fairfield police said. Marine units responded and found the vessel on the west side of the reef, partially submerged with all five people on board wearing flotation devices.

At the time of the call, a small craft advisory was in effect and winds were up to 30 mph from the east, with waves as high as 5 feet.

The people on board were brought to Fayerweather Yacht Club in Black Rock Harbor, according to police, who said the boat was also towed to the club, as its transmission was not working.

The Bridgeport Police Marine Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted Fairfield police in the response.
