$8 Million Rebuild Of South Benson Marina Under Consideration
The Parks and Recreation Commission is set to vote Wednesday on whether to recommend the proposal.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Plans are in the works for a nearly $8 million rebuild of South Benson Marina. The Parks and Recreation Commission is set to vote at its meeting Wednesday on whether to recommend the proposal to other town bodies.
At more than 30 years old, the current marina is reaching the end of its expected lifespan, according to Commission Chair Scott Walker. It's densely populated with tight navigation channels, and does not conform to current industry standards.
"It's too tight," he said. "... We're trying to improve usability and safety."

The town hired RACE Coastal Engineering to analyze the marina and help plan for its future, according to Walker. The parks commission's marina subcommittee reviewed several options provided by RACE and is recommending a full rebuild plan known as Option 11.
The plan involves reducing the number of boat slips and using fingers, or small docks, for individual boats, Walker said.

"It meets the recommendations of the professionals," he said.
Option 11 would not be executed until attrition reduces the number of boaters who are approved to store their vessels at the marina, according to Walker.
Other proposals from RACE varied in cost, but some did not include all the necessary components of the project, Walker said, adding he expects the Board of Finance will recommend bonding to pay for the $7.96 million rebuild.
Construction is still several years in the future, Walker said.
Wednesday's meeting will take place 7 p.m. at Penfield Pavilion, and will include a public hearing on the marina project, as well as the vote.
