Aldi Sets Opening Date In Fairfield

The much-anticipated opening of the grocery store in Fairfield's former Kohl's location is set for the end of the month.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield shoppers looking for a good deal on groceries will have a new option later this month, when Aldi opens in town.

The store’s much-anticipated opening is set for 9 a.m. July 29 at 290 Tunxis Hill Road, following an 8:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Not a week goes by that somebody isn’t asking about when is Aldi’s opening,” said Mark Barnhart, Fairfield’s community and economic development director. “We’re looking forward to helping celebrate during their grand-opening event next Thursday.”

Aldi is one of two stores that will fill the roughly 100,000-square-foot building once occupied by Kohl’s, which closed in fall 2020 after about 20 years in business. The grocery store will take up more than 20,000 square feet of the space, with Atlanta-based flooring retailer Floor & Decor, which opened in June, occupying the rest of the building.

“There’s certainly folks who shop at Aldi’s, including those who live in Fairfield, that are very excited about the possibility of having a store closer to where they live,” Barnhart said.

“We are excited to open our first Aldi location in Fairfield,” said Chris Daniels, South Windsor regional vice president for Aldi, in a company news release. “We offer a convenient shopping experience with affordable award-winning, sustainable and on-trend goods and look forward to serving Fairfield customers for many years to come.”

The Fairfield store is part of Aldi’s plan to open about 100 new locations in 2021 across the country, according to the news release. Aldi operates more than 2,000 stores in 37 states and is on track to be the third-largest U.S. grocery retailer by store count by the end of 2022. With a focus on low prices, Aldi has been named Value Leader among U.S. grocery stores for the past 10 years, according to the Market Force Information U.S. Grocery Competitive Study.
