The American Legion Recognizes the Fairfield Police, Fire Departments and Lt. Owen Fish Memorial Post 143
At our annual Department Convention awards ceremony, the Police, Fire Departments and Post 143 were recognized for outstanding service.
On July 10-11, 2026, The American Legion's Department of Connecticut held our annual department awards ceremony. These awards recognize not only our Posts service to our veterans, military and communities, but individuals and organizations within the community.
This year, Lt. Owen Fish Memorial Post 143 is proud to have sponsored the Legion's Connecticut Police Department of the Year and the Fire Department of the Year. We are very fortunate to have two such excellent organizations, dedicated to the safety and welfare of Fairfield citizens. Next time you see a police officer or a fireman, congratulate them and thank them for their fine service!
In addition to Post Chaplain of the Year, our very own Elwood Wahlquist. Elwood is the spiritual guide to our Post, and the recognition is well deserved.

Post 143 was also recognized for our monthly Post newsletter, and membership achievements. For the first time in many years, Commander DeWitt led the Post to a 100% quota membership through his leadership and guidance.
Finally, we thank the citizens of Fairfield, for your support of veterans and our youth programs. Without you, we would be without a mission. Happy 250th Birthday!
