FAIRFIELD, CT — A Fairfield firefighter suffered a minor injury Thursday morning while battling a house fire on Sturges Road near Mill Plain Green, according to officials.
The firefighter was injured when a stairwell inside the home collapsed, according to Deputy Fire Chief Roger Caisse. The firefighter was treated at the scene, and no other injuries were reported.
No people were inside the home at the time of the fire, but a cat was rescued from the home by firefighters and turned over to Animal Control for evaluation.
The fire was reported at about 8:20 a.m. by a passerby, and fire crews spotted smoke coming from the house when they arrived.
"Fire crews worked quickly to contain the fire, bringing it under control within approximately 15 minutes," Caisse wrote on Facebook (see below). "The residence sustained fire, smoke, and heat damage on all floors and is currently uninhabitable."
Added incident Commander, Assistant Chief Dennis Eannotti, "Early notification and a coordinated response allowed crews to quickly control the fire and prevent further damage."
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fairfield Fire Marshal's Office.
"The Fairfield Fire Department reminds residents to ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas," Caisse said. "Residents are also encouraged to practice home escape planning and close bedroom doors at night, which can help slow the spread of smoke and fire and provide valuable time to escape. Early notification of a fire plays a significant role in rapid response and limiting damage."
