As we start the week of Memorial Day, please spend a few minutes thinking about all the freedoms we enjoy today. It is a cliche that now more than ever, we live in a Republic that grants us not only the freedom to live life as we please, but we also have the power to choose those who we wish to govern us.
These rights and responsibilities are a direct result of the men and women who have bravely served our country in uniform. From the French and Indian wars to the war in Iraq, millions have served and signed a blank check, up to and including, the cost of their lives, to ensure our freedoms and way of life.
Memorial Day is set aside to remember those servicemembers who paid for our freedoms with their lives. It is up to us to carry on and continue the freedoms we enjoy.
Do not wish a veteran or servicemember a "Happy Memorial Day." That is left for Armed Forces Day and Veterans Day. Rather, take a moment of silence for those who paid the ultimate price. Better yet, attend a ceremony this coming weekend to pay your respect. While there, visit the grave of a veteran, repeat his or her name and thank them. For I believe as long as someone whispers the name of the fallen, they will live forever.
