FAIRFIELD, CT — Sacred Heart University plans to launch a Doctor of Medical Science program for practicing physician assistants and physician associates, becoming the first university in Connecticut to offer the degree, according to university officials.

The 30-credit doctoral program will be fully online and asynchronous. It is designed for practicing physician assistants who already hold a master’s degree and want to continue working while pursuing additional education.

"The Doctor of Medical Science program is an important extension of the University’s broader strategy to advance graduate education in the health professions," said Karl Minges, dean of the College of Health Professions."It reinforces our commitment to preparing clinicians who can work across disciplines, contribute to system-level improvement, and respond to evolving workforce needs."

Reynold Jaglal, chair and program director of Sacred Heart’s physician associate studies program, said the program marks the first Doctor of Medical Science offering in Connecticut.

"It reflects Sacred Heart University’s mission to prepare compassionate, forward-thinking leaders," Jaglal said. "We are giving physician associates the opportunity to take the next step in their careers while continuing to serve their patients and communities."

University officials said the program was developed in response to demand for physician assistant-specific doctoral education in the region. Graduates may pursue roles in academia, health systems management, organizational leadership and policy development.

The curriculum includes courses in leadership, health policy, population health and quality improvement. Students also will choose between tracks in education or health care leadership and complete a capstone project focused on a clinical or academic challenge.

"Health care is evolving rapidly, and there is an increasing need for highly trained professionals who can lead change," Eric Nemec, director of research and assessment and associate professor at Sacred Heart, said in a statement. "Students in this program can expect a rigorous, yet flexible learning experience that connects directly to their professional goals."

Nemec said the coursework and capstone project are intended to provide students with skills they can apply in their workplaces.

Jaglal said the program is intended to support leadership development in health care.

"Our graduates will be prepared not only to lead, but to lead with purpose—improving systems of care and the communities they serve," he said.
