The consequences of excessive speed are best explained by the laws of physics. The energy contained within a moving object – kinetic energy – is equal to the mass (weight) of the object times the square of the speed. Consider a car travelling at 30 miles per hour (mph) versus 20 mph: 20 squared = 400 and 30 squared = 900. Therefore, a 30-mph car has 2.25 more energy to impose onto an object or person that it strikes than a 20-mph car. A 40-mph car has four (4) times the energy than a 20-mph car (40 x 40 = 1600). And so on…..
