2 Injured In E-Bike Crash In Fairfield: Police

Early reports that the two were struck by another vehicle are false, according to authorities.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Two juveniles riding an e-bike in Fairfield on Wednesday suffered injuries when they were thrown off the e-bike when it struck a curb, according to police.

The incident occurred on Black Rock Turnpike, and initial reports on social media indicated that the two had been struck by another vehicle.

According to Fairfield Police Sgt. Jenna Wellington, the two were not struck by a vehicle, and those initial reports were false.

"There is no evidence that a motor vehicle was involved in this incident," Wellington wrote on Facebook. "Officers determined that two juveniles were riding an electric bike when it struck a curb, causing both riders to be ejected from the bike."

Wellington urged bicycle and e-bike riders to practice safe riding, particularly as warmer weather brings out more riders.

"Bicycle safety is taught in Fairfield schools by School Resource Officers and is reinforced through community outreach efforts," Wellington wrote. "Members of the Fairfield Police Traffic Unit have also participated in public discussions and e-bike safety panels to help educate residents on the safe and responsible operation of e-bikes. Topics include helmet use, obeying traffic laws, remaining alert to roadway hazards, and riding within one's skill level."

The sergeant also cautioned people from posting false information on social media before the facts are known.

"We encourage residents to allow investigators time to determine the facts before conclusions are drawn," Wellington wrote.
