FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield’s automated traffic enforcement (speed camera) program in designated school zones will remain active during the summer, but the reduced 20-mph school-zone speed limit will not be enforced while school is out of session, Patch has learned.
Beginning Wednesday and continuing through Sept. 1, speed safety cameras will enforce only the regular posted speed limits, which are 25 mph or 30 mph depending on the location, according to authorities. Cameras will continue operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The 20-mph school-zone speed limit will be enforced again during school arrival and dismissal times when students return Sept. 1.
"We ask drivers to continue to use caution in school zones as the schools may be in use for summer camps, athletics, or community events, but the 20-mph speed limit will not be enforced until students return in the fall," First Selectperson Christine Vitale said in a statement to Patch. "Speeding remains a significant issue in our Town, and drivers are still required to follow the posted speed limit at all times. Regardless of the time of the day, the speed limit is the law."
The town said motorists were limited to one violation during the first two weeks of June regardless of how many violations occurred. During the final two weeks of June, violations are capped at three per vehicle. Full enforcement without limits begins July 1.
According to the town’s speed camera vendor, Altumint, the phased approach has resulted in the forfeiture of potential fine revenue that otherwise could have been collected.

"Our goal has always been to educate motorists, encourage compliance, and ultimately make our roadways safer for everyone," Police Chief Michael Paris said. "From the outset of this program, we have intentionally prioritized education and voluntary compliance, with a commitment to changing driver behavior and improving safety."
The town said data collected during a warning period from May 1 through May 31 showed thousands of speeding violations. Exact numbers were not immediately available.

All enforcement zones are marked with signs notifying drivers of camera monitoring, as required by state law.
Officials said the town is also studying options for additional signage, subject to review and approval by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Office of State Traffic Administration.
