FAIRFIELD, CT — Robert Mayer, the former chief financial officer for Fairfield embroiled in the fill pile case, reportedly settled a wrongful termination lawsuit against the town for $95,000.
The Board of Selectpersons last month unanimously approved the settlement; the original case was filed in 2023.
Mayer was terminated as CFO in January 2020 by then-First Selectperson Brenda Kupchick, after he had served in the position for eight years.
He claimed that his employment was terminated unlawfully, in part, because the full Board of Selectpersons did not vote for the firing, and he was not afforded a hearing before the board, CT Insider reported.
Mayer was arrested in connection with the removal of items from his office, which police and town officials argued some of which were confidential and did not belong to him. He pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts in the case.
Prosecutors argued that Mayer may have tried to cover up his involvement in the fill pile case by removing some of the items from his office, which he denied.
The fill pile scandal, which dragged on for years, involved the illegal dumping of contaminated soil and fill at sites throughout town. Several defendants were charged in connection with the crime, with some receiving jail time.
Mayer avoided jail time when Superior Court Judge Tracy Lee Dayton sentenced him to an 18-month suspended sentence and three years of probation.
