Joylark Plant Kitchen & Bar: Vegan Dining Without Compromise

It isn't often that both diners leave a restaurant convinced they have just enjoyed one of their best meals—but that was precisely our experience at Joylark Plant Kitchen & Bar.

Located at 260 Post Road in Fairfield, Joylark is an entirely vegan restaurant with an ambitious promise: "unreasonably good, unbelievably vegan." Chef and owner Jenna McPartland previously operated the much-loved "The Stand Vegan Café" in Fairfield from 2019 to 2023. With Joylark, she has created an elevated yet welcoming destination designed to appeal to everyone—not only committed vegans.

The restaurant makes a memorable first impression. Its décor combines an Art Deco sensibility with playful, contemporary flourishes: sage-green paneled walls, graphic black-and-white flooring, globe pendant lights, delicate café curtains and a striking peacock-patterned feature wall above a rich blue banquette. Fresh flowers, brass table lamps and warm wood soften the bold patterns, giving the dining room an atmosphere that feels polished yet cheerful.

They also had the perfect table waiting for us: an intimate booth that allowed us to sit side by side rather than across from one another. It was comfortable, romantic and ideal for a leisurely dinner together. Nearby, we noticed a lovely, more private table that appeared capable of seating six to eight guests—an inviting option for a special occasion or small celebration.

Let's begin with the cocktails. My fiancé declared the Smoked Old Fashioned the best old-fashioned he has ever had. After tasting my Cucumber Martini, I could say the same. Made with vodka, cucumber juice, elderflower and simple syrup, it was exceptionally fresh, clean and beautifully balanced. The cucumber juice tasted freshly pressed. Joylark's bar program emphasizes fresh ingredients, house-made syrups, herbs and citrus, and that attention to detail was evident in both drinks.

The food proved every bit as memorable.

Of the starters, my fiancé was especially taken with the Carrot Tartare. Salt-baked marinated carrot was paired with risotto cake, avocado-pea purée, balsamic glaze and plant-based caviar in an elegant, inventive presentation. He thought the entire meal ranked among the finest he has experienced—even compared with meals at any of the high-end restaurants in our area.

My personal favorite was the Sambal Cauliflower. The battered cauliflower arrived crisp and beautifully coated in a flavorful sambal sauce, finished with scallions and sesame seeds. It was delicious beyond expectation: bold, satisfying and nearly impossible to stop eating. Both starters were presented with the care and precision one would expect from a fine-dining kitchen.

Even the Bread Basket distinguished itself. The rolls arrived warm and crusty, accompanied by a fascinating herb-infused sweet marigold butter that transformed a seemingly simple course into something worth remembering.

For our entrées, I chose the Warm Goodness Bowl, and it was truly out of this world. The crisp-edged kale was a particular highlight, complemented by tender roasted vegetables, chickpeas, brown rice and a wonderfully savory garlic cashew magic sauce. The interplay of crisp, tender and creamy textures made every bite interesting.

My fiancé ordered the Zoodles in Peanut Sauce and loved it. Zucchini noodles were layered with tempeh crumbles, glazed tofu, cilantro, pickled vegetables, kale, edamame, roasted red peppers and a rich peanut sauce. Both entrées were extremely generous—we enjoyed them thoroughly but still brought nearly half home.

We finished with lemon gelato, which was every bit as impressive as the courses that preceded it: bright, refreshing and an ideal conclusion to the meal.

The attentive and accommodating staff enhanced the evening considerably. Service was polished without feeling formal, and we felt genuinely looked after throughout the meal. That warmth appears to inspire remarkable loyalty. We met a couple who told us they have dined at Joylark every Saturday night since it opened—perhaps the most persuasive endorsement a neighborhood restaurant can receive.

The owners describe their goal as bringing joy to the dining experience through exceptional food, creative drinks and genuine hospitality. Based on our evening, that philosophy is more than marketing—it is felt in the food, the service and the atmosphere.

Joylark's greatest accomplishment may be its ability to make vegan cuisine feel neither restrictive nor like an imitation of something else. This is confident, thoughtfully composed cooking that celebrates vegetables through bold flavors, contrasting textures and beautiful presentation. Whether or not you ordinarily seek out vegan restaurants is beside the point: good food is good food, and Joylark serves exceptionally good food.

From the remarkable cocktails to the elegant starters, generous entrées, attentive service and excellent dessert, this was a meal that exceeded our expectations at every turn. We highly recommend Joylark and are already looking forward to returning—next time with our pups for an outdoor dining experience on the patio.
