Fairfield Police Charge 2 Bridgeport Men After Officer Injured During Arrest: Video

FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield police arrested two Bridgeport men Thursday after an incident on Brentwood Avenue left an officer injured, police said. Click here to view police video of the incident.

Marquis Craig, 28, and Jayvion Baker-Coleman, 20, were arrested Sept. 17 and charged with conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle, second-degree criminal trespass, sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny.

Craig was also charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, assault of a police officer and interfering with an officer. He was held on $100,000 bond.

Baker-Coleman also had three active warrants out of Stamford and was held on a total bond of $40,000.

Both were scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Oct. 1 on the Fairfield charges.

The incident began at about 6:40 p.m. when officers responded to Brentwood Avenue after a caller reported seeing two people repeatedly entering a residential property and removing items.

While canvassing the area, officers located Craig and Baker-Coleman traveling on a moped and determined they matched the description provided by the caller, Fairfield police said.

An officer on foot ordered the moped operator to stop. Police said the moped swerved around a stopped car, accelerated toward the officer and struck him head-on, knocking him to the ground.

Despite his injuries, the officer continued to assist in apprehending the two men before receiving medical treatment, police said.

Police identified Craig as the moped operator and Baker-Coleman as the passenger.

Investigators determined the moped had been reported stolen out of Stratford, according to authorities. Officers also found four bags containing items taken from the property and returned them to the residence, according to police.

The injured officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment of multiple lacerations and significant bleeding. Police said he remains out of work.

Fairfield Police Chief Michael Paris praised the officer's actions and discussed the effect such incidents can have on officers and their families.

"This officer was hurt doing his job, responding to a call of two individuals on someone's property removing items," Paris said in a statement. "Despite being struck and injured while attempting to apprehend them, he continued to assist in taking both individuals into custody. I am incredibly proud of his actions and his commitment to protecting our community. I was with him at the hospital last night, and these are difficult calls to receive as a Police Chief, but they are even more difficult for our officers and their families. We are all wishing him a speedy recovery and look forward to having him back with us."
