Barricaded Man Surrenders After Several Hours: Fairfield Police

The man repeatedly asked police to kill him while barricading himself inside a house in Fairfield early Tuesday morning.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A despondent man, who repeatedly asked police to kill him, surrendered to police after barricading himself inside a house for several hours early Tuesday morning in Fairfield, according to Lt. Robert Kalamaras. The man was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation, Kalamaras said.

At about 1:45 a.m. on Dec. 4, police responded to the area of University Drive for a report of a 36-year-man off of his medication. To sign up for Fairfield breaking news alerts and more, click here.

“The despondent made several comments about killing himself and his family members and barricaded himself in his bedroom,” Kalamaras said. “Officers established communications with the despondent where he made several requests to be killed by police. The Emergency Services Unit was activated.”

Police communicated with the man for several hours before getting him to surrender at 4:13 a.m., according to Kalamaras. The man was then taken to an area hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Kalamaras said the man wasn’t charged at the time because it was considered a medical episode.
