FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield resident and area business owner Mike Grant launched his campaign Tuesday to represent District 133 in the Connecticut General Assembly.

Grant, a Republican whose campaign announcement described him as “a political outsider,” supports “local control, parental choice, and a true representative government.” He also expressed concern that executive authority exercised during the coronavirus pandemic has had a negative impact on the state’s economy and the mental health of its residents.

“The focus of our current representative has been to push Hartford politics on our community,” he said in the news release announcing his campaign. “We need to reverse that course, and make our local voice not only heard in Hartford, but advocated for and acted upon. It is my honor to have the opportunity to be a voice for those who have felt underrepresented.”

The seat representing District 133 is currently held by state Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey, a Democrat who was first elected to the position in 2014 and has continued to hold onto the office, receiving at least 59 percent of the vote in each biannual race since, and getting 65 percent of the vote in 2020. McCarthy Vahey, whose district includes parts of Fairfield and now Bridgeport after a recent redistricting, filed to seek reelection last fall.

Grant was raised in Stamford, where he operates a family-owned logistics company, but moved to Fairfield in 2018. He is the father of two children in Fairfield Public Schools, a member of the Gaelic-American Club and a parishioner at St. Pius X Church.
