After years of traveling to Boston to participate in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund Walk, the Capalbo family is bringing their mission home with the inaugural Bank of America Capalbo Strong Walk in Fairfield.
The event marks a new chapter in the Capalbo family’s journey following the creation of the Capalbo Strong Foundation, established to honor the life and legacy of Charlie Capalbo and support children and families affected by pediatric cancer. More than 300 walkers are expected to participate Sunday, with fundraising expected to approach $200,000 in support of the foundation’s mission.
Charlie Capalbo, a former Fairfield high school hockey goalie, was just 17 years old when he was diagnosed with T-lymphoblastic lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Throughout his five-year battle with multiple cancers, Charlie inspired countless people with his unwavering positivity, resilience, humor and determination. His courage and strength brought together a community of supporters who stood beside him throughout his journey. Charlie passed away on April 24, 2022, one month shy of his 24th birthday, but the community that rallied around him continues to carry his legacy forward.
For the past five years, Team Capalbo participated in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund Walk in Boston, where it was consistently recognized as a top fundraising team. Funds raised by the team supported the Charlie Capalbo Memorial Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
With the launch of the Capalbo Strong Foundation, the family is expanding that mission and bringing the walk home to Fairfield for the first time. The new event will continue to support pediatric cancer research while also providing grants to hospitals, programs and organizations that directly support children and families affected by childhood cancer.
The inaugural Bank of America Capalbo Strong Walk will feature a 24K (15-mile) course that starts and finishes at Jennings Beach and travels through the Fairfield Beach neighborhood where Charlie grew up and was deeply loved. 5 and 10-mile options are also available, making the event accessible to walkers of all ages and abilities.
The 24K distance carries special meaning for the Capalbo family. Charlie was born on the 24th, passed away on the 24th just one month shy of his 24th birthday, and received his first life-saving bone marrow transplant on 2/4/19. The number 24 has become a powerful symbol of Charlie’s journey and legacy.
The family-friendly walk will bring together supporters of all ages to celebrate Charlie’s life, honor children currently battling cancer, remember those who have been lost, and raise critical funds to help families facing pediatric cancer.
“For years, our family and so many incredible supporters walked in Boston to raise money for Dana-Farber because we believed deeply in the importance of pediatric cancer research,” said Jennifer and Anthony Capalbo. “When we created the Capalbo Strong Foundation, we wanted to continue supporting that mission while also giving back to the local hospitals, organizations and families who stood beside Charlie and helped carry us through the most difficult years of our lives. Bringing this walk home to Fairfield allows us to bring together the community that loved Charlie while making a meaningful impact for children and families both locally and beyond.”
Funds raised through the Bank of America Capalbo Strong Walk will support the Capalbo Strong Foundation’s mission of advancing pediatric cancer research and providing resources and support to children and families facing pediatric cancer.
Participants are encouraged to register as a walker or make a donation in support of the Capalbo Strong Foundation. Every dollar raised helps carry Charlie’s legacy forward by supporting children and families affected by pediatric cancer.

Capalbo Strong Foundation’s Inaugural Walk Honoring Charlie Capalbo’s Legacy Takes Place This Sunday

Westport, CT – Westport tends to produce top-notch musicians. Many have moved away and yet many want to return when invited to come home. Such is the case with award-winning singer/songwriter Lisa Bastoni. Lisa, a Westporter who now lives in Northampton and performs throughout New England, is coming home. 

Rozanne Gates and Suzanne Sheridan, the creators of First Folk Sunday, had seen Bastoni perform at the 2023 Back Porch Festival in Northampton, MA. They were impressed with her songwriting prowess, her musicianship, and her connection to the audience. They took a chance and invited her to be a guest artist at First Folk Sunday two years ago and now she is back by very popular demand. Originally not knowing that she was actually from Westport, Lisa told Rozanne, “I know you both. I was just a kid, but I was at the anti-war rally you organized in 2001on Jesup Green when Suzanne sang. I thought she was wonderful.” So, on October 4, 2026, Lisa and Suzanne will be singing together on a few select songs. This will mark the 25th anniversary of their musical history. Truly a cause for celebration.
Bastoni has come a long way since 2001. She has had much success in the folk world. She is a 2022 &amp; 2023 New England Music Award nominee (Roots), 2020 &amp; 2019 Boston Music Award Nominee (Folk) and winner of 2019 New Folk at the esteemed Kerrville Folk Festival. In addition to her work in music, Lisa is a visual artist and teacher, and mother to two children. 
In March 2024, Lisa released her CD, “On the Water” and Eric Danton had this to say, “She’s an evocative songwriter who sings with the wisdom of someone who hasn’t always come by her insight the easy way, and the ache in Bastoni’s voice contains as much compassion as it does sorrow. It’s a powerful combination, whether she’s singing about two inexperienced youngsters in way over their heads — “just babies, having a baby” — on “Honeymoon in Disneyland,” or brushing away her own tears on the waltz-time weeper “Only Goodbye” as she explores long-distance yearning with earthy harmony vocals from Mark Erelli. On the Water isn’t heartrending all the way through: Bastoni lets a droll sense of humor show, too, particularly on “Let’s Look at Houses.” Co-written with Willi Carlisle, the song has a honky-tonk feel with bold steel guitar licks from Rich Hinman and lyrics about holding hands, reprising youthful lust and ogling houses out of your price range. Elsewhere, Bastoni celebrates getting out and never going back on “Hometown” (with harmonies from Kris Delmhorst), and choosing a path based on love, even as doubts creep in, on the muted “Cheap Wine.” 
Taking a vital stand and singing with a critical message, Lisa wrote “There Are No Kings in America” which has been sung nationally at many No Kings rallies. Suzanne Sheridan sang this song at the March 28 No Kings rally on Jesup Green in Westport.
All First Folk Sunday concerts take place at the Saugatuck Rowing Club, 521 Riverside Avenue in Westport. T. H. Breen, professor of American History at the University of Vermont, spotlights a crucial missing piece in the stories we tell about the American Revolution. Across the thirteen colonies, it was ordinary people who became the face of resistance. Without them the Revolution would have failed. Everyday men and women negotiated the revolutionary experience, accepting huge personal sacrifice, setting up daring experiments in self-government, and going to extraordinary lengths to preserve the rule of law.
About T.H. Breen
T.H. Breen is a professor of American History at the University of Vermont and an Early American historian interested in the history of political thought, material culture, and cultural anthropology. A Guggenheim fellow, he has held appointments at the Institute for Advanced Study and the National Humanities Center as well as the Pitt Professorship of American History and Institutions at Cambridge University and the Harmsworth Professorship at Oxford University. He has won several awards for distinguished teaching, including one from the Northwestern Alumni Society. His publications include five monographs, portions of the highly successful undergraduate text, America: Past and Present, and books including Marketplace of Revolution: How Consumer Politics Shaped American Independence, American Patriots: The Revolution of the People, George Washington’s Journey: The President Forges a New Nation, and The Will of the People: The Revolutionary Birth of America. Breen has also served as a special consultant for Colonial Williamsburg. In 2017 he was appointed the John Kluge Professor of American Law and Governance at the Library of Congress. Breen is the founding director of the Chabraja Center for Historical Studies, and has a Ph.D. from Yale.

About the 2026 Fall Speaker Series – Reflecting at 250

WHAT: Community theater group Fairfield Center Stage (FCS) will present the classic musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. The show runs for two weekends, Oct 2-11, 2026 at City Wide Church (former Rodeph Sholom synagogue) 2385 Park Ave Bridgeport (large, free parking lot onsite). Tickets ($25 General Admission, all-ages) are available for sale now.
WHEN: The performance schedule is as follows: Fri Oct 2 @ 7:30pm (opening), Sat Oct 3 @ 5pm, Sun Oct 4 @ 3pm, Fri Oct 9&nbsp; @ 7:30pm, Sat Oct 10 @ 2pm, Sat Oct 10 @ 7pm, and Sun Oct 11 @ 3pm (closing). WHO: This production will feature a cast of 40 local performers and a live orchestra of 6 musicians. Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

About the Speaker
Morgan Bengel is the Curator and Site Administrator for Old New-Gate Prison &amp; Copper Mine. She received her Bachelor of Arts in History and Museum Studies from the University of Michigan and her master’s degree in public history from Central Connecticut State University.&nbsp; Her role at New-Gate ranges from stocking toilet paper to managing millions of dollars in grant projects, and everything in between. She strives to connect people to the past to help foster a greater future.
