FAIRFIELD, CT — The coronavirus pandemic’s impact on Fairfield will not be forgotten, after a COVID-19 memorial designed and built by a local Boy Scout was installed at Jennings Park.

The memorial, created by Fairfield Warde High School senior Lin Sunil for his Eagle Scout project, was unveiled Wednesday afternoon at the corner of North Benson and Post roads.

“The main purpose of my project is to bring unity over one common cause,” according to Sunil’s memorial proposal, in which he said he hoped to show that even during times of division, the town can still come together. “This will also show that the town supports all those who are grieving due to the losses of the loved ones due to COVID-19.”

The brick memorial is 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide. An aluminim plaque reads, “COVID-19 swept the globe and destroyed millions of people’s lives. In a few years, the pandemic will be one more chapter in history, but the people we lost will always be with us. In loving memory of those angels who’ve fallen due to COVID-19, the virus that changed the world as we knew it.”

The Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved the memorial project, and the town parks crew created a walkway at the memorial, with plans to add benches.

Sunil was joined Wednesday by friends, family, First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick and Recreation Coordinator Chelsea Seres.

“I want to thank Lin for focusing his Eagle Scout project on Fairfielders who lost their lives to COVID,” Kupchick said Wednesday in a Facebook post. “I’m so proud of this fine young man’s love and commitment to our community.”
