Details On A Possible 'Hazardous' Monday Morning Commute

SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT — A powerful low pressure system will stay south of the area but will bring rain, sleet and freezing rain to portions of Southern Connecticut, which could lead to a hazardous morning commute in some spots, according to the National Weather Service.

It is also possible there may be some wintry weather on early Tuesday too, but mainly in inland sections of Southern Connecticut.

The precipitation is expected to begin around midnight and continue throughout Monday and into Tuesday morning. Fortunately, the precipitation will be light but it will feel very cold with wind chills approaching the mid 20s on Monday.

The National Weather Service says a "low pressure about 650 miles south of New York City will slowly track northeastward into Tuesday. The low will pass east of Cape Cod Monday evening, and into the Canadian Maritimes by Tuesday morning.

"Periods of rain will develop tonight, continue through Monday, and taper off early Tuesday. Some sleet and freezing rain is possible tonight across the interior, potentially producing a hazardous morning commute in some areas. After all areas go over to plain rain on Monday, the precipitation may end early Tuesday as light snow or a mix of rain and snow, primarily across the interior.

Brisk northeast winds can be expected into Monday, before becoming northwesterly and weakening late Monday into Tuesday. The strong north easterlies will produce areas of coastal flooding along the shoreline through Monday," the weather service says.

Rain showers likely before 4am, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 36. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday
A 20 percent chance of rain before 8am. Partly sunny, with a high near 49. West wind 7 to 9 mph.
