Ex-Student Tried To Extort $200K From Fairfield Prep: Police

The suspect, a former student of the private boys high school, allegedly sought a $200,000 payment from the school, according to police.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A former Fairfield Prep student is facing an attempted larceny charge after Fairfield police said he tried to extort $200,000 from the school.

Southport resident Kevin Orban, 19, a 2025 graduate of the private boys high school, was arrested on a warrant earlier this month on a felony charge of criminal attempt to commit larceny in the first degree. He is free on a promise to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court, and his next court date is scheduled for Aug. 20.

According to the arrest warrant obtained by Patch, on April 16, the school's Instagram page began receiving "harassing DM messages from Instagram profile: diswatutaught."

The warrant reads that the messages — mostly in lowercase and grammatically incorrect — began by imploring how the school should teach students about how to be accountable, "but instead u do nothing and act like youre morally ok because you have crosses up on walls."

They go on to reference an alleged "coverup" at the school, which is not defined in the messages, according to the warrant.

Then the messages reportedly begin to demand money.

"matter fact yall owe me sum [expletive] money... maybe we could work sum out and the secrets safe with me and the victims," one of the messages reads, according to the warrant.

The messages then reportedly appear to turn toward threats.

"and i just yall mentally aint all there so just to be clear, yall aint gon be around much longer unless we can work out a deal," it reads, according to the warrant. "starting price at 200k. im open to negotiations but keep in mind what happens if yall aint pay me.

"yall got til the end of April to pay up. clocks tickin."

In the warrant, Fairfield police said that after receiving the messages, the school's administration "increased security around campus and requested additional assistance from the Fairfield Police Department to maintain the safety of their students and those of Fairfield University." Fairfield Prep is a division of Fairfield University.

Fairfield police served a search and seizure warrant in May on Meta Platforms Inc., which owns Instagram, to determine the identity of the person who has the diswatutaught profile, according to the warrant. A couple of weeks after requesting the information, police received from Meta a phone number and email address that were linked to Orban.

Detectives interviewed Orban in his home in late May, and he admitted to sending the messages from the diswatutaught profile, the warrant reads.

"Orban said he was exercising his 'Freedom of Speech' to voice his displeasure with the way Fairfield Prep was handling the anti-Semitic rhetoric coming from current students on social media," police wrote in the warrant.

At the time of Orban's alleged messages, the Catholic high school was grappling with incidents where some students were accused of posting antisemitic messages on social media directed toward the New Canaan High School hockey team. Fairfield Prep disciplined an undisclosed number of students following the incidents.

According to the warrant, Orban continued to complain about the school, but offered no additional information.

After obtaining the arrest warrant, Fairfield police charged Orban.

Patch reached out for comment from Koffsky & Felsen, the law firm representing Orban, but did not immediately receive a reply.

A spokesperson for Fairfield Prep declined to comment.

"Fairfield Prep cannot comment on police matters," the spokesperson told Patch.
