Fairfield 10-Year-Old Girls Softball All-Stars Win Again

Blank Maine, 4-0, to finish 3-0 in New England Regional; play against on Friday in East Region semifinals

Behind the dominant pitching of  Brittany Romero, who tossed a no-hitter and struck out 16, the Fairfield 10-year-old girls softball All-Stars blanked Maine, 4-0, Tuesday in Fleetville, Pennsylvania.

The team finished 3-0 in the New England Regionals, having beaten Vermont, 15-0, and Rhode Island, 15-5, earlier in the tournament.

Even before Tuesday's game, Fairfield had clinched a spot in the East Regional semifinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Only two Maine batters put the ball in play. One was a failed bunt attempt back to the pitcher and the other a sixth-inning line shot that was snared by third baseman Michaela O'Donnell to save the no-hitter and end the game in spectacular fashion.

Fairfield, which outscored its opponents 34-5 in pool play, next takes on Pennsylvania, the No. 2 seed in the Mid-Atlantic Region, at the Christy Mathewson Benton Little League field  (intersection of route 407 and 107 in Fleetville, about 3 1/2 hours from Fairfield.)

The other East Region semifinal  has New York, the top seed in the Mid-Atlantic, facing New England runner-up Rhode Island at 8 p.m. Friday.

The Fairfield team will return home on Wednesday morning, then travel back to Pennsylvania on either Thursday night or Friday morning.   The consolation (1 p.m.) and championship game (3:30 p.m.) are set for Saturday.

Romero, Mary Rose Finnigan, Anna Rasmussen and Shannon McCartney scored Fairfield's runs against Maine.

Fairfield scored twice in the third and twice in the sixth, when Maddie Russell's two-run singled played Rasmussen  and McCartney.

Fairfield is 15-0 in the postseason, winning district, sectional, state and New England championships.
