Fairfield Arts Commission Seeks Local Artists For Utility Cabinet Public Art Project
Fairfield artists can submit designs for the public art project; selected artists will receive $500 stipends.
FAIRFIELD, CT — The Fairfield Arts Commission is accepting submissions from local artists for its Utility Cabinet Public Art Project, which will feature original artwork on utility cabinets at traffic intersections throughout town.
Artists have until Nov. 18, 2026, to submit designs for consideration. Selected artwork will be professionally printed on vinyl wraps and installed on designated utility cabinets in Fairfield.
Artists may submit up to three designs for each location. Submissions may explore any theme but must comply with the Connecticut Department of Transportation's guidelines for aesthetic treatments within state rights of way.

The utility cabinets house equipment that operates traffic signals at intersections. The project is intended to improve the appearance of these structures through public art.
Members of the Fairfield Arts Commission, in consultation with project sponsors, will select artwork based on creativity, relevance to the theme and suitability for public display.

Selected artists will receive a $500 stipend and recognition at the installation sites and in promotional materials.
Artists whose designs are selected will have one month to finalize their artwork. The commission will handle permitting, fabrication and installation of the vinyl wraps.
All artwork must comply with CTDOT requirements and receive approval from the state agency before installation. The completed wraps are expected to be installed in spring 2027.
"This is a really unique opportunity to help beautify our community and support local artists," Fairfield Arts Commission Chair Charlie MacDonald said. "We are truly grateful for the generous support of our sponsors, without which this project would not be possible."
Project sponsors include the Connecticut Office of the Arts, Fairfield University and the Fairfield University Center for Arts & Minds.
The town plans to feature participating artists, utility cabinet locations and sponsors on its website and in other promotional materials.
Artists interested in submitting designs should review the project's solicitation materials and design templates, which provide the dimensions for each utility cabinet location.
