The Eunice Postal Award: The Janotta Family

The Eunice Postal Award is given annually to a Democrat who has long exemplified the undying dedication to community service that Eunice Postal provided. This year the Eunice Postal Award is being given to a family. The Jannotta Family (Al and Jeannette, Michael, Gregory and Anthony) moved to Connecticut in the early 1970s, where Al purchased a retail liquor store in Westport. With hard work and the support of his family, Al went on to establish one of the largest and most successful industry franchise operations in the state.

While Jeannette, Michael and Gregory helped manage the family’s retail business interests, Anthony became an attorney, and for over 17 years he was dedicated to public service in Connecticut. Having served in the administration of former Attorney General and now U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, as well as in the administrations of Governor Dannel Malloy and Attorney General George Jepsen, Anthony is now a partner at Dentons, a global law firm that is the largest in the world. He is active in the community and has been a member of the Fairfield DTC for over 20 years.

The Jannottas have long actively supported and raised funds for numerous local, state and federal campaigns, including the successful candidacies of Senator Blumenthal, Governor Malloy, Attorney General Jepsen and First Selectman Tetreau. Al and Jeannette recently retired from their retail business operations and now reside in Fairfield, CT, and Jupiter, FL, focusing their efforts on investment and residential and commercial development initiatives. Anthony and his wife Brenda and their children, Eleanor and John, reside in Southport.

The Jannottas are actively involved in many civic and charitable causes, including their longstanding efforts on behalf of the Connecticut Food Bank, and are well known for their dedication and commitment to their community.

The Denise Dougiello “Young Turk” Award

This award is given to a newer member of the Fairfield DTC whose contributions are helping shape the future of our Town. This year’s award is being given to Phil Pires. Phil’s leadership, insight and energy are a great asset to the DTC. Through his commitment and drive, Phil has represented District 4 (formerly 7) on the RTM since 2013, and currently serves as the RTM’s minority leader. He was also a member of the RTM’s Redistricting Committee. Phil has been extremely active on the Fairfield DTC, volunteering for numerous local and state campaigns and serving as the Assistant District Leader for District 4. An active Community Board Member, Phil is also a volunteer teacher for Junior Achievement of Western Connecticut, an organization dedicated to educating students in grades K through 12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy.

Professionally, Phil is a principal with the law firm of Cohen and Wolf in Bridgeport, where he practices business litigation, municipal law, and land use and zoning. He received his B.A. from Haverford College and his J.D. from University of Connecticut School of Law. Phil is an avid soccer player and runner, and he is usually running with his wife, Geraldine, when he is not attending night meetings.
