Fairfield Firefighers, Animal Control Rescue Bird Caught In Fishing Line

FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield firefighters and Animal Control Thursday performed a water rescue to save a bird tangled in fishing line, according to authorities.

"The crew found that a fishhook embedded under its wing prevented it from freeing itself," fire officials wrote on Facebook. "Once rescued and on shore, members used small hand tools to surgically remove the hook, freeing the bird which was weak from the fight."

The town's Animal Control officers took the rescued bird to a local veterinary facility for treatment.

Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Barry told Patch that performing such rescues is something the department takes seriously.

"It's great when we can help, [but] it's important to remind everyone to call us instead of trying it themselves," Barry wrote in an email. "Our dispatchers know exactly how to get help and who to send, and we have all the safety equipment, special training and the ability to help everyone!"
