Fairfield Giants Go 5-0-1 In 2015 Sullivan Bowl

The Fairfield Giants Jr. Midgets kicked off the 2015 season in a Sunday showdown vs. the Seymour Tigers. The pre-season jitters showed from both teams in the opening series but on 3rd and long Andrew Loya hit tight end Charlie Wilcox on a 67 yard touchdown pass right up the left sideline. The defense was anchored by Declan O’Hara and Anthony Espinoza flying around at the linebacker position along with Tommy O’Connell and Grady Bartlett at defensive end position keeping the Tigers’ offense contained. The game battled back and forth in the second quarter, with the Giants’ offensive line in the heat of the battle. Key blocking down field from Ryan Durell and Freddy Capossela, allowed the Giants some protection as Kyle Steveson caught a 15 yard pass from Andrew Loya to set the Giants up deep in Seymour territory. As the horn sounded at half time the Fairfield Giants were leading 6-0. After the kickoff to start the second half, the Giants’ offense marched down the field under the command of Finn Donelan with hard running by Jed Keresey and Trevor Knisley but the Giants were unable to convert on 4th down and turned over the ball. On the following defensive series, the Giants were able to force a fumble, and Declan O’Hara recovered the ball at the 50 yard line. After some aggressive running from Luke Martucci, the Giants penetrated into Seymour territory. Andrew Loya dropped back and under heavy pressure found Charlie Wilcox for a 35 yard touchdown reception. The defensive line refused to give an inch with the efforts of Dan Shannon. On the ensuing Giants’ possession, Finn Donelan found Tyle Ciccia for a nice 20 yard reception to move the chains. As final whistle sounded, the Giants were able to win the annual Sullivan Bowl with a score of 12-0 over the Seymour Tigers.
PEE WEE (0-0) FAIRFIELD 28 SEYMOUR 7
The Giants Pee Wee team kicked off the 2015 season defending their 2104 State Title. The Giants took on the Seymour Tigers in a pre-season game played in the 2015 Sullivan Bowl. Seymour struck first, literally! After taking the opening kickoff back to the 40 yard line, the Tigers scored on a 55 yard, off-tackle run on thevery first play from scrimmage. Seymour hit a PAT pass for a 7-0 lead. That’s all Fairfield needed to ignite the fire!
The Giants offense followed with an impressive drive down to the one year line where QB Nick Morris punched it in on a QB Sneak. Great runs by Peter Strang, Tyler Hibberd, and Mike Innaimo lead the drive which included a 20 yard pass reception to TE Gavin Toth. Morris PAT kick was good and the Giants took the lead 8-7 lead...And never looked back! The Giants would score in all 4 quarters. Morris would score on a 50 yard punt return and 60 yard inside run, and also hit Innaimo on a 35 yard TD strike in the corner of the end zone to complete the 28-7 victory over the Tigers.
The defense took charge, holding Seymour to Zero first downs in the remaining 3 quarters of play. Grady Golier, Drew Buckley, Arron Sepot, Anthony Bambus and Jack Gremes anchored the defense.
Game standouts included Jamie Caposella, Connor Gitman, and Nick Versea.
Giants open their regular season next weekend vs the Amity Spartans.
JR PEE WEE1 (0-0) FAIRFIELD 36 Trumbull 0
The JPW1 team started the season with a dominating defensive display highlighted by Dustin Pool, Sean Donohue and Jack Melbourne. Coach Paul Atala wanted the boys to set the tone early and the team responded with a 36-0 victory over the Trumbull Raiders. QB Thomas Kramer, ran for 2 TD’s and connected a 15 yard pass to Jordan Davis in the end zone to end the first half 22-0. Second half they continued the pressure with Joe Dalai scoring 2 TD’s on big runs and strong running by Aiden Casey. The defense never let up and the game ended with an interception by Justyn Davis deep in Giant territory to secure the shut out. Other standouts included Mac Gleason, Michael Selca and Matthew Selca. Next week, the Milford Eagles bring a 2014 State Championship Team to Fairfield for a big test.
JR PEE WEE2 (0-0) FAIRFIELD 33 SEYMOUR 19
Fairfield Giants JPW2 team faced Seymour in the Sullivan Bowl on Saturday. The Giants jumped ahead early to a 20-0 lead. Seymour and Fairfield exchanged scores to end it 33-19. O’Neill led the offense with two rushing and one receiving TD. Fairfield QB Kane threw his second TD of the day to Spangler. Riley swept left to reach the end zone. Barnaby, Anderson and Kane ran in the extra points.Defensively the Giants disrupted Seymour all day by getting into the backfield and causing turnovers. Wrobel, Mitchell and Macri led the defense.
