Fairfield Man Charged With DUI After 2-vehicle Crash In Westport

WESTPORT, CT — A 62-year-old Fairfield man was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and failure to drive in a proper lane following a two-vehicle crash in Westport on Dec. 10, according to police.

The incident occurred at about 9 p.m. at an undisclosed location on the Post Road West. No injuries were reported in the crash, but police found that one of the vehicles also crashed into a nearby building causing minor damage.

"During the course of investigating this incident, officers observed physical clues leading them to suspect that one of the involved operators, identified as James Begley, might have been operating under the influence at the time of the accident," wrote Westport police in a statement. "Begley was asked to perform a series of field sobriety tests which he reportedly did not perform to standard."

Begley was taken into custody and charged with the above listed violations, and at police headquarters, chemical test results "showed an elevated blood alcohol content" in his system.

He was released after posting a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Dec. 17.
