Fairfield Mourns Death Of Former Deputy Police Chief

FAIRFIELD, CT — Former Fairfield Police Department deputy chief of police, Don Smith, 60, has died, after a battle with cancer. Smith served with the Fairfield PD for 31 years, retiring in 2021.

Word of Smith's passing was posted Tuesday on social media by Monroe EMS, where he had been chief for 12 years.

Smith passed away at home with his family by his side, according to Monroe EMS.

"Don played such a huge role in making Monroe EMS what it is today and he was passionate about providing excellent patient care and supporting the service and our members," Monroe EMS posted on Facebook.

"From caring for thousands of patients to his focus on community and EMS education and developing future first responders, he has a legacy that will live on in others."
