FAIRFIELD, CT — The Fairfield Police Department is looking to hire an entry level police officer, according to officials.

"I would not be surprised if that number grew to approximately 150 by the deadline," Esposito said in an email. "The testing process itself takes around six (6) months to complete, and we would like to hire by the middle of the year."

At the present time, the Fairfield Police Department is budgeted for 110 sworn officers, and it currently has 109 "on the books," according to Esposito. That leaves one position available to be filled, but that number could grow in the future.

"That said, we may be seeking to hire additional officers if we experience any retirements in 2023," Esposito said, adding that he knows of at least one possible retirement next year. Also, the town could always look to add police officers, if deemed necessary, which is something he does not control.

Applicants for the Fairfield position must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicant must be a United States Citizen
  • Applicant must be 21 years of age
  • Applicant must be a high school graduate (or have passed a recognized General Educational Development Test.)
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

"The Fairfield Police Department will conduct an extensive background investigation on each applicant once a conditional offer of employment is given," the job listing reads. "This will include examination of each candidate's driving history, criminal record, employment history, financial history, and past/present illegal drug use. Prior conduct in police/security/corrections fields along with basic honesty and integrity will be extensively examined."
