FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield has the fifth-best elementary school in the state, according to rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

Sherman School ranked fifth in Connecticut out of 560 elementary schools rated by the publication based on math and reading proficiency and performance. Also in the top 100 were Fairfield's Riverfield, Burr and Dwight schools, which ranked 43rd, 67th and 71st, respectively.

Sherman was seventh in the state in reading proficiency and tied for fourth in math proficiency, according to U.S. News, which categorized the school as “well above expectations” in both reading and math performance.

Sherman has a student-teacher ration of 13-to-1, and 90 percent proficiency in both math and reading, according to U.S. News.

The publication, which used U.S. Department of Education data from the 2018-19 acadmic year to determine its rankings, named Booth Free School in Roxbury as the best elementary school in the state.

U.S. News also ranked middle schools in Connecticut. Of the 288 rated, all three Fairfield middle schools were in the top 50. Roger Ludlowe was 14th, Fairfield Woods was 24th and Tomlinson was 49th.
