FAIRFIELD, CT — After months of battling between the Fairfield Democratic and Republican parties inside and out of court, voters will head to the polls Tuesday in a special election to decide a seat on the Board of Selectmen. Polls for the special election are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting takes place at the normal polling locations. To determine your polling location, click here.

The special election pits Republican Ed Bateson, who is currently filling the seat vacated by Republican Laurie McArdle, against former Selectman Kevin Kiley, a former Republican. (To sign up for Fairfield breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

The battle over the special election began when McArdle, who was elected along with Tymniak last November, resigned her seat this past December, citing an increase in business travel, with three years remaining in her term.

Bateson, the Republican Town Committee’s endorsed replacement, was approved in a vote by Democratic First Selectman Mike Tetreau and Tymniak to fill the vacancy.

However, the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee submitted 3,200 petition signatures to the Town Clerk for certification on a petition to require a special town-wide election to decide a replacement for McArdle’s seat. A total of 2,031 signatures were required, according to state statute.

The issue has been in the courts ever since and the Appellate Court on Friday issued an order declaring that the special election will take place on Tuesday, June 6.

All registered voters in Fairfield are eligible to vote in the special election, regardless of party affiliation. Connecticut law does not permit voter registration on the day of special elections.
