Fairfield Warde Boys Soccer Settles For 0-0 Tie With Wilton

Mustangs dominate play with 11-5 edge in shots but can't score

In a result that left both teams less than satisfied, the Fairfield Warde and Wilton boys' soccer squads played to a scoreless tie Monday afternoon at Lilly Field.

Warde (1-1-1) dominated the contest, but couldn't score despite a wide edge in the play.

"We're walking away with a point, which is unfortunate because we should have had more, but it is what it is," Mustangs coach coach Justin Ottavio said.  "You take the good with the bad.

The mood wasn't much better on the other bench.

"We had no energy today," Wilton coach Jim Lewicki said.  "We had a few chances,  but they had a lot more. Warde dominated the middle of the field."

The Mustangs outshot the Warriors, 11-5,  and took five corner kicks, compared to the Warriors' two. Warde also an advantage in time of possession.

Still, Wilton (1-0-2) did have a few solid scoring chances.

Perhaps the closest the Warriors came to getting oin the scoreboard occured just before the half. Senior Ben Quantock fed a beautiful pass through traffic to teammate Evan Owen, who darted between the defenders.

Owen unleashed a blistering shot on Warde goalkeeper Dylan Strachen, who managed to make a diving kick and avert the goal.

Wilton captain Evan Roux feels his team's offense needs to be "more creative",  adding, "We had the opportunities.  We just didn't put them away."

Mustangs'  captain Oliver DeBarros echoed a similiar sentiment.

"The result didn't show what whappened in the game at all," he said. "We clearly had the better play for the majority of the game, but we have to finish our chances when they are there."

Wilton received a stellar game from goalkeeper Mike DeSantis, who kept the Mustangs in the contest.

"Warde played a very good game," Lewicki said. "They were on us quickly and I'm not going to tale anything away from them. We were lucky to come away with the point today."

Both teams were awarded 10 indirect kicks, and Warde had one direct kick. As frustration mounted in the second half, two Warde players were issued yellow cards.

Both teams play again on Wednesday. Wilton travels to Stamford for a 4:15 p.m match and Warde visits Ridgefield in a 6:00 p.m start.
