Former Fairfield Police Chief Dies

The late Joseph "Bud" Sambrook was a member of the Fairfield Police Department for 42 years.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Joseph Marshall "Bud" Sambrook, who was a former Police Chief and member of the Fairfield Police Department for 42 years, passed away on April 23 at the age of 90, the department announced.

Sambrook, a lifelong Fairfield resident, joined the Force in 1964, and served as an officer, sergeant, lieutenant and captain before he was named chief in 1997.

Before his tenure in the department, Sambrook joined the U.S. Air Force at 17 and served for eight years and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.

During his career with Fairfield police, Sambrook was instrumental in spearheading many of the department's initiatives, including establishing the motorcycle squad, bringing the D.A.R.E. program and signature car to Fairfield, and also introducing the police helicopter. Additionally, Sambrook also served as a firearms instructor for more than 40 years.

"Chief Sambrook leaves behind a legacy of leadership, service, and devotion to Fairfield," officials wrote on Facebook. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to his daughter Michelle and her family, his loved ones, and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving with him."

According to his obituary, visitation is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Lesko Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road in Fairfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that people consider a donation to the Fairfield Police Scholarship Fund.
