Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued For Southern Connecticut

The National Weather Service said we may see strong to severe storms Wednesday. Here is the timeline and new details.

SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT — The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for all of southern Connecticut Wednesday as there is a chance for strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

In a statement for northern Fairfield county, all of New Haven, Middlesex and New London county, the weather service said "The Storm Prediction Center has placed the area in a marginal risk for severe weather this afternoon and this evening. There is the potential for isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms with the main threat being damaging winds, however, small hail is also possible."

For the southern portion of Fairfield County, the weather service said "The Storm Prediction Center has placed the area in a slight to enhanced risk for severe weather this afternoon and this evening. There is the potential for isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms with the main threat being damaging winds, however, small to large hail is possible. And an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out."

"A cold front will approach from the west later today, with additional showers and thunderstorms expected to develop this afternoon," the National Weather Service said. "Some of these storm may become severe with the main threats damaging winds gusts, heavy rainfall and hail. High temperatures will be in the mid 70s along the coast to the lower and mid 80s in the interior.

"Most of the showers will come to an end around midnight with the cold front pushing south of the region. Lows tonight will be in the lower to mid 60, with a few upper 50s across the far
northwest. Thursday will start off mostly dry, however some showers return for the afternoon as the front south of the region lifts back north as a warm front."

Today: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 2pm and 4pm. Some storms could be severe, with hail and damaging winds. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 62. West wind around 7 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph.

Thursday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Friday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65.
