Incidents Of Church Vandalism Under Investigation In Fairfield: Police

FAIRFIELD, CT — A 66-year-old Bridgeport man is facing a misdemeanor charge of interfering with an investigation, after Fairfield police said he interfered with officers last week during an investigation into alleged vandalism at two churches in Fairfield.

Fairfield police responded on Wednesday and Thursday "to separate disturbances at two churches in Fairfield for a man drinking holy water and talking loudly to himself, causing a disturbance," according to Sgt. Jenna Wellington.

After police located the suspect on Friday, officers attempted to warn the individual not to return to the churches, but during the conversation, he "became combative and interfered with the investigation," which led to his arrest.

Separately, Fairfield police are also investigating the potential vandalism of a statue at another local church, which was reported on Aug. 9.

"We cannot speculate that this incident is connected," Wellington told Patch, in reference to the case involving the arrest. "Further details are not available at this time as the case is under investigation."

Wellington added that the department takes seriously any incidents that occur at local houses of worship.

"Fairfield Police maintains a strong working relationship with our local houses of worship, and officers are aware of these incidents and the concerns surrounding them," Wellington said.
