FAIRFIELD, CT — Hundreds of Fairfield residents gathered at the Pequot Library Sunday to protest against a monopole transmission power line proposal by United Illuminating that will cut through portions of Fairfield and Bridgeport.

News 12 Connecticut reported that the protest, organized by the grassroots group Sasco Creek Neighbors Environmental Trust, Inc., was designed to draw awareness to the project, and urge people to make their voices heard.

Under the proposal, UI would install more than 60 metal utility monopoles along the railroad corridor, which would carry power lines. Many of poles would tower above the skyline more than 100 feet in the air.

Residents want UI to come up with a different plan, such as burying the lines instead of hanging them from above. UI says the project is needed to harden the system and keep up with increasing energy demands.

A Change.org petition against the plan has garnered more than 1,200 signatures toward a goal of 1,500.
