Letter To The Editor: I Would Vote For State Rep. McCarthy Vahey

Fairfield Warde High School junior Allison Burt lends her support to state Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey.

Dear editor,

My name is Allison Burt and I am a junior at Fairfield Warde High School. I write this letter in part to express my grief over not yet being able to vote. I envy my parents and two older siblings who have the right to cast their ballots this upcoming fall in order to have a voice in all levels of government: federal, state and local.

If I could, I would vote for incumbent State Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey. Throughout her time in office, she has been the epitome of a great leader — respectful, gracious, empathetic, hard-working and community oriented. I was proud to lobby alongside her for the Tobacco 21 bill. I applaud her recent efforts regarding the police accountability bill; Cristin respects and supports the brave women and men of Connecticut’s police forces while acknowledging the dire need for systemic change and racial equity. Cristin is a dedicated civil servant who works tirelessly to keep her constituents safe, well-educated, happy, and financially stable; therefore, I can think of no person better suited for this role than her. As our state representative, Cristin has worked to establish paid family and medical leave; to combat global warming by requiring climate change education in school curriculums as well as by voting on legislation to limit the use of plastic; and to lower prescription drug costs by setting a $25 cap on insulin prices. Cristin is a caring leader who has reached out often during these last several months to support and help her constituents through the COVID-19 pandemic.
