Man Charged with Sexually Assaulting, Robbing Woman in Fairfield has Previous Rape Conviction

FAIRFIELD, CT — Michael Fontaine, the suspect arrested for allegedly raping and robbing a woman near the Fairfield train station late Saturday night, has an extensive criminal history that dates back to the 1980s, according to the Connecticut Post.

Fontaine, 48, was arrested by Fairfield Police in connection to the attack on Dec. 17 — just 11 days after he was released from the Osborn Correctional Institute in Somers, according to the Post.

Fontaine, a New Haven resident, is a registered sex offender with a conviction for aggravated rape in 1996 in Massachusetts, according to the Connecticut sex offender registry.

Fontaine was charged again with rape for an incident in prison, according to the Post.

Fairfield Police responded to the area of 600 Reef Road at about 10:20 p.m. on Dec. 17 on the report of a victim who said she had just been sexually assaulted and robbed at knifepoint by a light-skinned black male, according to police.

The victim told police that she was walking on Reef Road from the train station when she heard heavy footsteps approaching from behind, right before she was attacked.

Police followed a trail of blood and shoe prints in the snow to find Fontaine hiding in the bushes on Old Post Road near Beach Road. The victim was able to injure Fontaine during the attack, leading to the trail of fresh blood droppings. The victim identified Fontaine as the man who attacked her, according to police.

Fontaine was arrested on charges of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, first-degree robbery, third-degree assault and second-degree larceny.
