FAIRFIELD, CT — A man faces charges after he crashed a car into a wall, a tree and a sign before law enforcement found him trying to flee the scene, according to police.

Francesco Perrouna, 56, is charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive right after the incident about 12:30 a.m. Monday, a police report said. Perrouna was driving north on Black Rock Turnpike when he failed to negotiate a curve, hitting a stone wall, a tree and a street sign before his vehicle came to rest at the turnpike's intersection with Finn Street, according to the report.

When police arrived, Perrouna had removed the car's back license plate and was attempting to leave the scene, even though his vehicle was inoperable due to significant damage and the airbags had deployed, the report said. Perrouna's breath smelled of alcohol and he yelled and swore at police while emergency personnel attempted to check him for injuries, according to the report.

Perrouna refused to go to the hospital and to undergo field sobriety tests, the report said. He was taken to police headquarters, where he declined a chemical breath analysis and was transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport for a minor injury he suffered during the crash, according to the report.

Before going to the hospital, Perrouna posted a $100 bond, the report said. He is set to appear in court Jan. 13.
